With the new year approaching, we thought we’d give you a rundown of our Top 10 bulletins of 2017.

1. Only 32 million people were watching…

‘Imagine achieving a lifetime’s ambition of winning Best Picture and giving a gushing speech, only minutes later to be told on live TV that you haven’t actually won the award, and the embarrassment of having to return to your seat to watch the real winners take the Oscar.’

Charlie discusses the mix-up at the Oscars and whether the incident will have any long term impacts on the organisations involved.

2. Free Training Courtesy of President Trump

‘I have always said that some of the best education on business continuity and crisis management, apart from BC Training courses, can be found watching crises unfold on the news. We can learn an immense amount by looking at how those involved handle the incident and how the media and public react.’

Following President Trump’s response to the far-right rally in Charlottesville, Charlie looks at the lessons business continuity professionals can take from observing crises unravelling in the media.

3. Tables Turned – Managing a Reputation Incident

‘As a consultant, you spend your time telling others how to manage incidents, but you very rarely get a chance to actually manage one. My chance to manage a reputation incident came a couple of weeks ago.’

Charlie discusses reputation management, in response to the negative reaction he received for his bulletin titled ‘The Grenfell Fire Fallout…’.

4. ISO 22301 and the Business Continuity Octopus

‘I would consider a good BCMS to operate like an octopus. It sits at the heart of the organisation, but reaches into each and every function of the business.’

Guest author, and consultant at PlanB Consulting, Gordon Brown explains his concept of the Business Continuity Octopus. This of course requires collaboration from different parts of the organisation.’

6. Some thoughts on the WannaCry Ransomware Attack

‘The waters are still again and all appears to be quiet. A few are still busy recovering from the attack, but just because all seems still, as watchers of the film Jaws will know, somewhere under that still water is a massive shark biding its time before it strikes again. The WannaCry ransomware attack will not be the last of this type of attack.’

The WannaCry ransomware attack caused major disruption to the NHS, and subsequently, many other organisations. Charlie provides his thoughts on what was arguably the most talked about cyber attack of 2017.

7. Harvey and Irma – What can we learn?

‘Oscar Wilde once said, “To lose one parent may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.” In the same way, to have one hurricane is bad, but to have one after the other is something else.’

Whilst in the midst of hurricane season, Charlie advises business continuity professionals what they can learn from past hurricanes, in preparation for any future incidents.

Charlie looks at the dark side of major incidents, advising BC professionals to take steps to ensure individuals and organisations are not profiting from disasters, as they have done in the past.
